Smart Sipping

Alcohol is a fun and enjoyable part of holidays as it is a popular beverage in many social situations. Excess alcohol consumption, however, can lead to an abundance of excess calories through the drink itself and through mindless snacking. Alcohol increases the feeling of hunger by temporarily dropping blood sugar-leading you to compensate by bringing a source of energy in from food. Hormones that are involved in regulating hunger are also suppressed through alcohol consumption, leading to increased appetite.

It is also beneficial to have knowledge about the different types of alcohol in regard to calorie content and serving size. Here are some popular beverages and their profiles:

  • Wine: 120 kcals in 5 oz

  • Beer: 150 kcals in 12 oz

  • Liquor: 98 kcals in 1.5 oz

Some alternative beverages to sip on may fit your nutritional goals better. They are typically lower in calories.

  • Vodka soda: 1.5 oz of vodka, sparkling water, fresh lime slice

  • Wine Spritzer: 3 oz of wine with 3 oz of sparkling water

  • Kombucha and 1.5 oz of liquor of choice for some probiotics

Remember, guidelines recommends limiting alcoholic beverage consumption to 1-2 drinks per social gathering for both mean and women. It is also advised that women consume no more than 10 drinks/week and men consume no more than 15 drinks/week. Try and consume alcohol with a balanced meal and space out beverages with 1-2 glasses of water between each drink.
